Earthrace Visits The BVI - Update

Article and Photos By Melissa Woodley

The Earthrace at the Road Town Waterfront Jetty on Friday, October 10

A true, one of a kind boat, the wave-piercing Earthrace powerboat docked in Road Town early Friday morning. The premier, tourist board, and media were on hand to welcome the crew to Tortola, and after two weeks at sea, the crew is eager to spend the weekend in the BVI and enjoy time off the cramped vessel. On Friday, area school children were going to meet the Earthrace team and tour the eco-friendly boat, which is on a world tour with a mission to draw attention to the importance of the environment. Running on used cooking oil, the boat has a 100% carbon neutral footprint, meaning it leaves no lasting effect on the environment in its wake. However, the crew aims to leave a mark on every place it visits by telling the story of this unique boat.

The volunteer crew aboard Earthrace is truly in it for the love of the boat and the message, as it is anything but a glamorous life they are living. Quarters are cramped onboard, with room for just a few people at a time. Earthrace has the necessities and nothing more - a tiny galley, a cockpit with navigational equipment, sleeping bunks and storage space. No air-conditioning or other creature comforts are anywhere to be found. Messages from children around the world adorn the walls and ceiling, showing that the boat and its crew is indeed making an impact on the people it meets.

Earthrace is a tri-hull powerboat that was built with the goal to break the world record for circumnavigating the globe on 100% biodiesel fuel, which it did in 60 days, 23 hours and 49 minutes earlier this year. The crew of five will be making a few more Caribbean stops before going through the Panama Canal to tour the Pacific, New Zealand, and Australia.
