The lime N' Dine feature highlights restaurants around the BVI. It not intended to be a restaurant review but more of a personal dining experience of the writer.
We hope you find this feature both interesting and helpful.
The Fat Cat Thai Restaurant
- Keith Semple
My love affair with Thai Cuisine began in India way back in 1998 when I was on a cricket tour there. I had always been a fan of Asian cooking, especially Indian and Chinese, but never had Thai food... until then! This most memorable of dining experiences was filled with the wonderful taste of rich and exotic flavors combined with an intense spiciness that had me drenched in perspiration by the time I got half-way through my meal. I didn't quite make it to the end but left the table already a convert. Since that day I've jumped at every opportunity to indulge in Thai foods so when my wife, Alexis, suggested we try the Fat Cat Thai restaurant here in Tortola for dinner one evening, I didn't need a second invitation.
Located on the top floor of Hotel Castle Maria just a short walk from Road Town, The Fat Cat lies in a wonderfully serene setting overlooking the harbor and Central Administration Building. Owners Ming and Meow offer the most delightful and friendly service of authentic Thai Cuisine Monday to Saturday from 6 - 10 pm.
Being seafood lovers, we were thrilled with the options available from the quite extensive and varied menu. Appetizers range from Won Ton Soup with Chicken or Shrimp, Indonesian Beef Satay served with Peanut Sauce, and Sweet Pickle Cucumber, Chinese BBQ Pork served with Pickle Ginger and a whole lot more.
The main course is packed with mouth-watering selections such as the succulent Flank Steak topped with Red Curry Sauce and Fresh Basil served with White Rice, Stir-Fried Sweet & Sour Thai Noodle, Vegetables and Crushed Peanuts (optional) with choice of Chicken or Shrimp, and my favorite, Spicy Thai Green Curry with Jumbo Shrimp (Chicken optional) served with White Rice. You can always ask Ming or Meow to make it a bit mild if you've had an experience with the Spices like I've had in the past.
The dessert menu features choices like the exotic Lime, Lychi and Mint Sorbet, the soft, light and delicious Homemade Cheesecake, and the quite heavenly Vanilla Ice Cream with Caramel Sauce. If you're not one for dining out, don't worry, the takeaway menu has just what you need to sit back and enjoy at home. Vegetarian options are also available. Choose from a variety of drinks to accompany your meal including red & white wine and Singha Beer (also available in light) from Thailand, exclusively served at Fat Cat.
The restaurant is currently celebrating its third anniversary so if you're looking for a wonderful place to have dinner, the Fat Cat is certainly the place to go. Eating in or taking out, Ming and Meow will ensure you have a dining experience that will take your breath away. Mine certainly was!
