The lime N' Dine feature highlights restaurants around the BVI. It not intended to be a restaurant review but more of a personal dining experience of the writer.

We hope you find this feature both interesting and helpful.

Brunch at the 1748

- Claudia Colli

Grilled Chicken

Sunday brunch at Long Bay Beach Resort's 1748 restaurant is as pleasant a way to while away a Sunday afternoon as any on Tortola. The buffet is seemingly endless with a large and varied selection of salads, appetizers, soups and main courses. And then there is the view. The restaurant's large deck, sheltered by a massive awning and furnished with elegant teak tables and chairs, looks out onto one of Tortola's most beautiful beaches.

The buffet tables are set up in the restored plantation era sugar mill, aptly called the 1748 after the year of its construction. The food, though, is thoroughly modern. There is a freshly made Caribbean soup of the day, Lobster Medallions and Peel and Eat Shrimp in Cocktail Sauce, assorted sushi and cold meat, cheese and smoked salmon platters. And those are just the appetizers.

Entrees include seafood, such as mahi-mahi, Seafood Newberg and for the West Indian palate, there is Saltfish and Okra. Sunday Brunch wouldn't seem authentic without Eggs Benedict and Long Bay makes sure there is plenty on hand. If you are still hungry or feel you can fit a bit more on your plate, there is also a pasta station and a desert table.

Long Bay, which was originally built in 1963, is one of Tortola's first beach hotels. Situated on a 52-acre estate, it has over the years evolved from a small property with a handful of hillside and beach cottages to a full-service resort with over 154 units. As the hotel has expanded, so have its restaurants, which cater to both the hotel's guests as well as island residents. As an added incentive for island residents during the summer, there will be a 25% discount for groups of six or more.

If you can't make Sunday brunch, Long Bay offers breakfast, lunch and dinner daily at the 1748. For Pasta Lovers, the Pasta House is located on the upstairs deck of the renovated sugar mill on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and although the Palm Terrace dining room (the original restaurant at Long Bay) is closing for the summer season, it will reopen with its à la carte menu in November.

If you come for that extensive brunch though, remember that you may have to take off a few calories. So go for a swim, or take a walk along the beach. With its nearly mile long stretch of sand, Long Bay is probably one of the most beautiful spots in the world.
